The wind whipped with fury around the walls and roof.

Jane checked her instruments were hidden but reachable for the dozenth time, her body jittering with anxiety. From a drawer in the kitchen, she removed a chef’s knife and tucked it inside her dress pocket.

Her mobile buzzed in her pocket: it was Simon. She let it go to voicemail and stared at the rectangular screen as it captured her ex-husband’s message.

Should she listen to it?

She hadn’t expected to hear from him ever again, only because her mind was honed on one objective. If she was honest, she hadn’t thought of him at all in the last few months, but seeing his name on her phone made the ground drop from under her feet.

Jane pressed her phone to her ear.

‘Hi, Jane, I thought I’d give you a call, seeing as it’s… I’ve been thinking about you a lot lately, and him,’ said Simon with a sigh. ‘I wonder what you do all day in that big house after work. I worry. I was standing in line at a shop yesterday, and I noticed some Kinder Eggs on the shelf – do you remember how he always begged us to buy him one every time we went shopping? It wasn’t just the chocolate he loved, but the crappy toys inside. Called them the best sweet ever. Remember how happy they made him. I’m sorry for calling, I’m sorry for this… for all of it’.

The message ended, and Jane was falling and falling and falling.
